Founded in 2015, IOTA is a public goods infrastructure to bring trust in our digital world. Through IOTA, governments, organizations and people are able to interact with each other in a secure, trusted and verifiable way. IOTA is one of the most established Blockchain projects in the world and is primarily being driven by the non-profit IOTA Foundation headquartered in Berlin, Germany.
IOTA’s technology improves the Blockchain design to create a feeless, and highly scalable distributed ledger called the “Tangle”. Designed to support frictionless value and data transfer, the Tangle is a DLT infrastructure for Web3 applications and digital economies. Unlike blockchain alternatives, the Tangle allows transactions to be added in parallel; it also boasts low resource requirements, as well as fast transactions with finality within seconds that are feeless for token holders. The IOTA token is the native currency on the IOTA network. It is used to transfer value and data and enable feeless micro-payments.
Today, the IOTA Foundation envisions "Digital Autonomy for Everyone", emphasizing trust and transparency in the global marketplace. A key milestone in this pursuit involves establishing an open, permissionless and censorship-resistant infrastructure for digitizing and tokenizing real-world assets, enabling seamless and unrestricted trade. This connects the physical and digital worlds, transforming underutilized assets into the digital world and thereby unlocking dormant value, fostering growth opportunities while ensuring equality for all.
Two organizations help drive the adoption of IOTA and grow the ecosystem of partners and builders using IOTA technology by allocating support and funding: The Tangle Ecosystem Association is a Swiss-based non-profit association, and the IOTA Ecosystem DLT Foundation is the first DLT foundation to be registered under the regulatory authorities in Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM).
