Nils earned his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Machine Learning Security and Privacy, focusing on differential privacy, adversarial machine learning, and mitigating threats related to the misuse of large machine learning systems. His dissertation was given the Mathematics Doctoral Prize’s Top Honor in 2024, and he was awarded Waterloo's Alumni Gold Medal. His work received a distinguished contribution award at Microsoft MLADS in 2023. During his PhD, Nils interned at Microsoft Research and Borealis AI where he researched privacy-preserving training methods for large machine learning models.
