Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA)

The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) is a government corporation created under Republic Act No. 9593, also known as the Tourism Act of 2009, to support the development and regulation of the Philippines’ tourism industry. It replaced the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) and continues the functions previously performed by the PTA, except where inconsistent with the new provisions of RA 9593. TIEZA operates as the implementing arm of the Department of Tourism (DOT), providing essential infrastructure and facilitating investments in Tourism Enterprise Zones (TEZ) across the country.

TIEZA plays a critical role in tourism development through its main functions: infrastructure development, designation, regulation, and supervision of TEZs, and the management or privatization of its assets. It ensures the efficient creation and maintenance of tourism-related infrastructure, such as transport facilities, visitor centers, and accommodation services, which are vital to enhancing the overall tourism experience in the Philippines. By fostering investments in TEZs, TIEZA also helps stimulate economic growth and job creation in the tourism sector.

One of TIEZA’s significant contributions is the development of tourism zones in areas with strong cultural, historical, religious, heritage, and eco-tourism value. These regions are often rich in natural beauty and traditional Filipino practices, offering both local and international tourists immersive and enriching experiences. TIEZA's efforts to improve these areas help instill pride in Filipino heritage while promoting sustainable tourism practices that highlight the nation's unique cultural identity.

In addition to these activities, TIEZA is responsible for administering the collection of the Philippine Travel Tax, ensuring that funds generated are properly allocated to support tourism-related initiatives. Through these initiatives, TIEZA plays a central role in shaping the Philippines’ tourism landscape and boosting the country’s global competitiveness in the sector.
