IRENA

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 2010 to promote the global transition to renewable energy. Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, IRENA's mission is to support countries in their efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in their energy systems, improve energy efficiency, and combat climate change. IRENA plays a crucial role in fostering international cooperation and facilitating the exchange of knowledge, technology, and best practices in the renewable energy sector.

IRENA's work covers a wide range of activities, including the provision of policy advice, capacity-building, and technical support to member countries. It helps governments design and implement effective renewable energy policies, offers financial and technical assistance for energy projects, and conducts research to advance the understanding of renewable energy technologies and their potential. One of the agency’s key initiatives is the development of global renewable energy scenarios, providing forecasts on energy demand, technology trends, and the role of renewables in achieving global climate goals.

In addition to supporting national energy transitions, IRENA is actively involved in fostering partnerships and collaborations with other international organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Bank, to create synergies in the global energy transition. The agency also engages with the private sector, investors, and innovators to mobilize resources and drive renewable energy deployment.

IRENA currently has over 160 member states, and its work is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in relation to affordable and clean energy, economic growth, and climate action. Through its research, advocacy, and technical support, IRENA continues to be a central player in accelerating the adoption of renewable energy worldwide, contributing to a sustainable and low-carbon future for all.
