Qatar Fund for Development extends $49.99m loan to Tajikistan’s Rogun Hydropower Project

04 September 2025

The Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) has signed a $49.99 million (QR 182 million) loan to support Tajikistan’s Rogun Hydropower Project, a multi-phase initiative central to the country’s energy security and export ambitions. The agreement follows a site visit and progress review, adding to the project’s blended financing from multilateral and bilateral partners. For Tajikistan, additional concessional funding helps advance construction timelines for one of Central Asia’s most significant hydro assets; for Qatar, it reinforces a development portfolio that targets long-term socio-economic outcomes through infrastructure and energy investments.

Once operational, Rogun is expected to improve reliability, reduce seasonal shortages, and enable surplus power sales, with attendant benefits for industry and regional interconnection. As with large hydro projects globally, stakeholders will monitor environmental and social safeguards as commissioning phases proceed.
