COVID-19 has created heightened awareness of food safety for producers, businesses, governments and consumers. As per UN FAO, the four pillars of food security are availability, access, stability and utilization.
The Agriculture industry has been going through a phase of innovation. Food security, Changing Trends in Agri-Food sector and sustainability mean more opportunities for SMEs. SMEs are critically needed to support global food security, resiliency, sustainability, health and nutrition.
The session will discuss the innovative agriculture technologies, how the pandemic has evolved the industry, what are the challenges faced nowadays and explore how to seize the business opportunities in agriculture sector to advance sustainability.
Matthieu is a partner in the Public Policy practice, based in Dubai, with 15 years of consulting experience (8 years in the Middle East/GCC). Areas of expertise include: economic and social development strategy and government R&D and innovation/commercialization. He handles Food security and aggrotech Strategy for a GCC country and Investment strategy for a SWF in agri and food tech, several Due Diligence.
Dr. Ismahane Elouafi is Director General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture, based in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. She is internationally known as a strong advocate of alternative approaches to ensuring food security and nutrition in marginal environments, including use of neglected and underutilized crops and non-fresh water resources in agriculture. Ranked among the 20 most influential women in science in the Islamic world, she has initiated and promoted a number of programs and efforts to empower women in science in the Arab world and beyond.
Eren has 17 years of professional experience in the investment industry on a wide range of asset classes, investment strategies/solutions and geographies both in direct and fund investments. Eren joined the African Development Bank in 2018 as Chief Investment Officer, Food and Agriculture, focusing on the origination and execution of private sector transactions across Africa.
Abdulaziz’s interest in food security began during his time at McKinsey & Co. working extensively with GCC governments addressing a variety of national risk challenges. A serial investor in disruptive technologies (Lyft, Indigo Ag, among others), he is dedicated to addressing the food security challenge. He dedicates time to the region’s food ecosystem as a mentor at Savour Ventures, the Middle East’s first accelerator focused on food. Previously a banker with HSBC, Abdulaziz holds a BA from University of Pennsylvania and MBA from Wharton.
Salvatore Lavallo is the AgTech Sector Lead at the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), where he spearheads programmes to attract agriculture innovators to invest in Abu Dhabi and grow its burgeoning AgTech ecosystem. In addition, he leads ADIO’s work to grow the ecotourism, mobility and other key sectors, helping innovative companies establish and expand their business in the emirate. Salvatore previously held roles at McKinsey & Company and the Tony Blair Institute, working on various projects across sectors and continents. He graduated from New York University & United World College.
